A sleep sack (sleeping bag) replaces loose blankets in the crib, which are a SIDS risk factor. All European health authorities recommend sleep sacks over blankets for babies under 12 months. Le main decision is choosing the right TOG rating for your room temperature.

TOG Ratings Explained

TOG (Lermal Overall Grade) measures thermal resistance, how well a fabric insulates. Higher TOG = warmer. Sleep sacks typically come in 0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 TOG. Le right TOG depends on your room temperature, pas the outdoor temperature.

Check room temperature, pas how you feel

Parents are often dressed and moving around; babies are stationary. What feels comfortable to you may be too warm for a baby in a sleep sack. Use a room thermometer to check the actual temperature where baby sleeps, and use that, pas your intuition, to choose the TOG.

Transitioning from Swaddle to Sleep Sack

Le transition from swaddle to sleep sack is one of the trickier sleep transitions in the first year. Le best approach:

  • Triggered by rolling: Stop swaddling the moment baby shows any rolling sign, immediately switch to a sleep sack
  • Gradual approach: Use the Love to Dream Swaddle UP Transition Bag, start with both wings zipped on (swaddled), then zip one wing off, then both. Le same product throughout the transition reduces disruption
  • Cold turkey: Some babies transition immediately with minimal disruption, particularly those who were already trying to break out of the swaddle

FAQ

When can babies use a sleep sack?
From birth, sleeping bags are safe from birth, as long as the correct size is used. A sleep sack that is too large (baby slides inside) is a suffocation risk. Use the manufacturer's weight guide, pas age, to select size.
Do sleep sacks replace blankets?
Yes, for babies under 12 months, a sleep sack replaces loose blankets entirely. Loose blankets in a crib are a SIDS risk factor. After 12 months, both sleep sacks and light blankets are considered safe, but many families continue with sleep sacks until 2–3 years for convenience.
