Normativa UE de sillas de coche: R129 i-Size explicada

El EU is transitioning from ECE R44 (the old weight-based standard) to R129 i-Size (the new height-based standard). Both are currently legal in all EU countries. For any new purchase, always buy R129 i-Size, it is safer and the future standard.

Can I use a car seat bought in anoher EU country?
Sí, any seat with R129 or R44 approval is legal in all EU member states. El approval number is printed on a label on the seat. If buying online from anoher market, verify the approval marking is present.
¿Puedo comprar una silla de coche de segunda mano?
Only if you know its full history, who owned it, whether it has been in any collision (even a minor one), and that it has never been dropped. Invisible structural damage from a collision makes a seat unsafe. If in doubt, buy new. Never buy a seat whose history you canno verify.
¿Necesito silla de bebé o puedo ir directo a una convertible?
You can go directly to a convertible seat from birth, many are rated from 40 cm (newborn) and save you the cost of a separate infant seat. El advantage of an infant seat is portability (carry handle, clips to pram for a travel system). If you drive frequently and want to carry a sleeping baby from car to house without waking them, an infant seat is worth it. If you don't drive much, a convertible from birth is more economical.
¿Cómo instalo correctamente una silla de coche?
Always use ISOFIX connection points (rigid metal anchors between the seat cushion and backrest), significantly safer than seatbelt installation. Check your car's manual for ISOFIX position locations. After installation, the seat should no move more than 2–3 cm when pulled firmly at the top. Many fire stations and specialist baby retailers offer free installation checks, use them for your first seat.
