Most important featureLie-flat position, non-negotiable for newborns

A stroller suitable for a newborn has one non-negotiable requirement: a fully flat sleeping position. Beyond that, suspension quality, weight, and fold practicality matter for European city use. This guide covers what to look for and which strollers deliver it.

Why Lie-Flat Is Non-Negotiable for Newborns

Newborns must lie flat in a stroller. A baby who cannot yet hold their head up must not be placed in a reclined (semi-upright) position, this compresses the airway. European health authorities and the NHS explicitly state that newborns and young babies should only be in semi-reclined positions for short periods, and always under supervision.

The lie-flat position is also important for hip development, the same M-position principle as in carriers applies here. Newborns' hips should not be forced straight for extended periods.

⚠️ The 2-hour rule for car seats and strollers

In semi-reclined positions (car seats, bouncy chairs, non-flat stroller seats), the recommended maximum time is 2 hours for young babies. This is a European health guideline based on oxygen saturation studies. Always use a lie-flat option for sleep and longer outings.

FAQ

Can newborns use any stroller?
Only strollers with a fully flat (0 degree) lying position are appropriate for newborns. Semi-reclined positions compress the airway. Always check the stroller manual, some "lie-flat" claims mean 150–160 degrees, which is not truly flat. The carry cot position (separate bassinet on the stroller) is the safest option for newborns.
Do I need a travel system for a newborn?
A travel system (stroller that accepts an infant car seat) is very convenient for parents who drive frequently, you can transfer a sleeping baby from car to stroller without waking them. It's not essential if you primarily walk or use public transport. See our guide on the Doona i as an alternative car-focused solution.
How long can a newborn stay in a stroller?
In the lie-flat carry cot position: as long as needed, this is equivalent to lying in a crib. In a reclined (semi-upright) seat position: limit to 2 hours for young babies. After 6 months when baby can hold their head and sit with support, standard reclined positions are fine for longer periods.
