Best Premium: Pampers Premium Protection

Pampers Premium Protection remains the best-performing diaper in Europe on the core metrics that matter: absorbency, softness and overnight performance. The wetness indicator on Newborn and Size 1 is a genuinely useful feature in the first weeks. The umbilical cord notch in the Newborn size prevents irritation during healing.

For parents who want eco credentials at similar performance, Lillydoo scores close on absorbency (4.2 vs 4.6) and wins strongly on materials (plant-based, chlorine-free, Oeko-Tex). At Size 3, Lillydoo subscription pricing is within €0.05–0.10/diaper of Pampers Premium, less of a premium than it initially appears. See full comparison: Pampers vs Lillydoo vs Huggies.

Lillydoo eco diapers

Lillydoo is a German brand with a subscription model and a genuinely different approach to materials. The diapers are made with plant-based top sheet, are free from chlorine bleaching, and carry Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification.

Best Value: Huggies

Huggies Extra Care diapers

Huggies is genuinely 15–20% cheaper per diaper than Pampers Premium across European markets. Performance is slightly lower on softness and overnight absorbency, but Huggies' leg cuff design is the best in our test for preventing blowouts, particularly in Size 2 and 3. For parents whose babies are prone to blowouts, Huggies may be the better choice regardless of overall score.

Best Eco Premium: Bambo Nature

Bambo Nature is a Danish brand, FSC certified, carrying the Nordic Swan ecolabel, and available in Germany, the UK and Belgium. It's the most credentialled eco diaper in the European market, the Nordic Swan label involves genuinely rigorous lifecycle assessment rather than just ingredient screening. Absorbency is good (not quite Pampers level) and skin comfort is excellent. Available mainly via specialist baby retailers and Amazon DE.

FAQ

What is the best diaper brand in Europe?
Pampers Premium Protection is our top pick for overall performance, best absorbency, softest material, widely available across all 6 markets. For eco-conscious parents, Lillydoo (plant-based, chlorine-free) is the best alternative at a similar price point.
Are supermarket own-brand diapers safe?
Yes. All diapers sold legally in the EU must meet EN 14372 requirements. Supermarket own-brands (Aldi Mamia, Lidl Toujours, dm Bio Windeln) comply and perform reasonably well in tests, just below the leading premium brands on softness and overnight performance.
How many diapers does a newborn use per day?
Typically 8–12 diapers in the first weeks. Newborns feed frequently and each feed often triggers a bowel movement. By 3–4 months this reduces to 6–8 per day. Plan for approximately 60–80 diapers per week in the first month.
