⚡ Quick Answer
When to introduceFrom 6 months, peanut is a top allergen; early introduction REDUCES allergy risk (LEAP study evidence)
Allergen?Yes, peanut is one of the top 14 EU allergens. Introduce early (6 months) to reduce risk per ESPGHAN guidance.
Choking riskLow for smooth peanut butter. HIGH for whole peanuts. never give whole peanuts under age 4.

Peanut butter can and should be introduced from around 6 months. Despite being one of the most feared allergens for parents, the evidence strongly supports early introduction, the landmark LEAP study (2015) showed that early introduction of peanuts to at-risk infants reduced peanut allergy development by 81%. European guidelines (ESPGHAN) now recommend introducing all allergens including peanuts around 6 months, not avoiding them.

The key rule: always use smooth peanut butter. never whole peanuts or crunchy peanut butter, which are choking hazards until at least age 4. Thin smooth peanut butter with a small amount of warm water or breast milk to make it easier to swallow.

High-risk babies: different protocol

If your baby has severe eczema or an existing food allergy, discuss peanut introduction with your paediatrician first, they may recommend supervised introduction or allergy testing before starting. For most babies without these risk factors, introduce at home in the morning as part of normal weaning.

How to Serve Peanut Butter at Different Ages

AgeHow to serve peanut butter

Safety Notes

  • Always use smooth peanut butter. never whole or crunchy peanuts under 4 years
  • Thin peanut butter with water or breast milk before serving to babies, sticky thick peanut butter is a choking risk
  • Introduce in the morning at home, observe for 20–30 minutes after first exposure
  • After tolerating, include peanut in diet regularly (2–3x/week) to maintain tolerance
  • No added salt or sugar, check label; many adult peanut butters contain both

FAQ

Should I give peanuts if there's a family history of allergy?
Family history of peanut allergy does not mean you should avoid introducing peanuts, in most cases, it means you should introduce early (potentially even earlier, from 4–6 months). If your baby has severe eczema or an existing food allergy, discuss with your paediatrician first, they may recommend a blood test or supervised introduction. For all other babies with family history only, introduce at home following standard guidance.
What brands of smooth peanut butter are safe for babies?
Any smooth, unsalted, no-added-sugar peanut butter is suitable. In Germany: Alnatura or dm Bio Erdnussmus. In France: Naturéo or Bjorg. In UK: Whole Earth No Added Sugar or standard Sunpat smooth. Check the label for: 100% peanuts (ideally), no salt, no sugar, no palm oil (not a safety issue, but worth noting). Avoid: honey-roasted, crunchy, or flavoured varieties.
My baby had no reaction to peanut butter, how often should I give it?
Include peanut-containing foods at least 2–3 times per week to maintain tolerance. Studies show that tolerance is maintained by regular ongoing exposure, babies who are introduced successfully and then stop eating peanuts can develop allergy later. Include peanut butter in porridge, on toast, or in sauces regularly as part of normal eating.
