Best Baby Cribs 2026: Tested for European Homes

Cribs receive enormous attention in baby product marketing, and most of it is misdirected. The crib frame is largely a commodity; what matters far more is the mattress, the mattress fit, and whether the crib meets EU safety standards. This guide prioritises those things.
What Actually Matters in a Crib
- Safe mattress fit: The gap between the mattress and crib sides must be no more than 25mm (about 1 finger width). Larger gaps create entrapment risks. Measure your specific mattress in your specific crib before using.
- No drop sides: Drop-side cribs were banned in the EU after multiple incidents. All EU-sold cribs since 2011 must have fixed sides. Never buy a pre-2011 second-hand crib.
- Slat spacing: Must be 45โ65mm between slats, narrow enough that baby cannot get their head through, wide enough for adequate ventilation.
- Adjustable mattress height: Multiple height positions allow you to lower the mattress as baby starts pulling up, preventing falls over the side.
- European standard EN 716: All EU cribs must comply. Check for this marking on any crib you buy.
EU Safety Standards for Cribs
EU Crib Safety Checklist
EN 716-1 and EN 716-2: The EU safety standard for children's folding cots. Any crib sold legally in the EU must comply.
Never buy a second-hand crib: If you don't know the history of a crib, whether it's been dropped, if a part has been replaced with a non-original, don't use it. Always buy the mattress new even if the crib is second-hand.
No cot bumpers: Banned in several EU countries and strongly discouraged by all health authorities due to suffocation risk. Never use them regardless of marketing claims.

The Mattress: More Important Than the Crib
The crib mattress has more direct impact on baby's safety and sleep quality than the crib frame. Key requirements:
- Firm: A safe sleep surface must be firm, soft mattresses are a SIDS risk factor. Test: press your palm into the mattress and it should spring back immediately.
- Flat: No incline, no wedge, no positioning devices. Perfectly flat.
- Exact fit: No gap larger than 25mm between mattress edge and crib sides.
- Waterproof cover or use a protector: Mattresses that absorb moisture harbour bacteria. Use a fitted waterproof cover over the mattress under the crib sheet.
A good mattress on an inexpensive IKEA Sundvik is a safer and better sleeping environment than a poor mattress on a premium Stokke. Buy the best mattress you can afford; the crib frame is secondary.
