When you need oneCentral heating reduces humidity significantly, most relevant DE/FR winters

Humidifiers are common in German, French and other continental European homes where central heating significantly reduces indoor humidity in winter. For babies, dry air can contribute to respiratory irritation, dry skin, and disrupted sleep. Here's what to know before buying.

Do You Actually Need a Humidifier?

Before buying: measure your nursery humidity. A basic hygrometer (€5–15) will tell you the actual humidity level. Central heating in European homes typically reduces indoor humidity to 25–35% in winter, well below the 40–60% target. If your nursery is in this range, a humidifier will make a measurable difference to your baby's comfort.

If you're in southern Europe with milder winters, or if your home doesn't use central heating heavily, your baseline humidity may already be adequate. Measure first.

Target Humidity Level

40–60% relative humidity is the recommended range for a baby's nursery. Below 40%: dry air irritates airways and skin. Above 60%: encourages mould and dust mite growth, which triggers respiratory issues. Buy a hygrometer to monitor, most good humidifiers include one.

For cleaning: clean the water tank every 2–3 days and descale weekly. An uncleaned cool mist humidifier can distribute bacteria into the air, which defeats the purpose.

FAQ

Where should I place the humidifier in the nursery?
At least 1 metre from the crib, direct mist on baby or bedding creates condensation and damp. Place on a shelf or table at mid-room height for optimal distribution. Never on the floor directly below the crib or pointed at the crib.
How often should I clean a baby humidifier?
Wipe out the tank every 2–3 days with white vinegar solution and rinse well. Full descaling once a week in hard-water areas. A dirty humidifier can become a source of bacterial aerosol, which is worse than no humidifier at all. Check your model's specific cleaning instructions as some tank designs are harder to clean than others.
