Not all nightlights are equal for sleep. The colour temperature of the light has a significant impact on melatonin production, the hormone that signals the body it's time to sleep. Getting this right means choosing the right colour, not just the cutest design.

The Colour Science: Why Amber and Red

The body's circadian rhythm is largely regulated by light exposure, particularly blue-spectrum light (wavelengths 480–500nm), which suppresses melatonin production most strongly. This is the same mechanism that makes phone screens disruptive at night.

How Bright Should a Nightlight Be?

The nightlight should provide just enough light to see during night feeds without turning on main lights, approximately 1–5 lux (a candle at 1 metre produces about 1 lux). This is very dim. Most commercial nightlights are too bright at their standard setting; look for adjustable brightness or use the lowest setting available.

For baby: the nightlight is for your benefit during feeds and nappy changes, not for baby. Baby doesn't need a light on to sleep, in fact a completely dark room is ideal. The nightlight should be dim enough that it doesn't light up the room, just provides navigation.

FAQ

Do babies need a nightlight?
Babies don't need a nightlight for themselves, they sleep better in complete darkness. The nightlight is for parents to navigate and feed without turning on main lights. A dim amber or red nightlight serves this purpose without disrupting your own or baby's melatonin production.
What colour nightlight is best for newborns?
Amber or red, these wavelengths have the least impact on melatonin. Avoid blue, cool white, or bright white nightlights. The IKEA SPÖKA (amber LED) is the simplest good choice at minimal cost. The Hatch Rest allows you to dial in the perfect amber or red at adjustable brightness.
Is the Hatch Rest worth the price in Europe?
If you want a combined nightlight, sound machine and sleep program controller in one device, yes, the Hatch is excellent and the app control is genuinely useful for adjusting without disturbing baby. If you just need a dim amber light for night feeds, the IKEA SPÖKA at €10 does the core job adequately.
