When Pampers Wins

For the first 3 months, Pampers Premium Protection is the better choice. The wetness indicator on Newborn and Size 1, which turns yellow when wet, is invaluable when you're still learning your baby's rhythms and can't tell from touch alone whether a diaper needs changing. The umbilical cord notch prevents irritation during healing.

For overnight use, Pampers consistently outperforms Huggies in our testing. The higher absorbency means fewer nighttime leaks, which matters significantly for sleep quality for both baby and parents.

When Huggies Wins

If your baby is prone to blowouts, Huggies is worth considering regardless of the overall score. The double leg cuff design outperformed Pampers specifically on blowout containment in our test, particularly in Size 2 and Size 3. For parents who are regularly changing outfits after feeds, Huggies' cuff design may make a meaningful practical difference.

On budget: Huggies runs approximately 15–20% cheaper per diaper than Pampers Premium across European markets. Over a full year of diapering at 6–8 diapers/day, that's a meaningful saving.

FAQ

Is Pampers or Huggies better?
Pampers Premium Protection wins on absorbency, softness and overnight performance. Huggies wins on blowout prevention (leg cuff design) and price. For most babies, Pampers is the better all-round choice. For blowout-prone babies or budget-conscious parents, Huggies is a strong alternative.
Do Pampers or Huggies run bigger or smaller?
Sizing varies slightly between brands. Both follow European standard weight ranges (Newborn 2–5kg, Size 1 2–5kg, etc.) but the fit in practice can differ. If your baby is between sizes, try one pack of each brand in the larger size before committing.
What about eco alternatives to Pampers and Huggies?
Lillydoo (plant-based, chlorine-free) and Bambo Nature (Nordic eco-label) are the leading eco-certified alternatives. Both perform well. Lillydoo particularly close to Pampers on absorbency. See our full eco guide: Best Eco Diapers in Europe 2026.
