How to Serve Avocado by Age

AgeHow to serve
6–7 monthsMashed with a fork to smooth consistency. Can mix with other purees (sweet potato, banana). Avocado spears for BLW, ripe avocado is soft enough to gum safely.

9–12 monthsSmall diced pieces, spread on toast strips, mixed into eggs or yoghurt
12 months+All forms, guacamole, sliced, in sandwiches

Nutritional Benefits

  • Healthy fats: Monounsaturated fats are critical for brain development, avocado is one of the richest plant sources
  • Folate: Important for cell growth
  • Vitamin K: Supports bone health
  • Potassium: More potassium per gram than banana
  • Fat-soluble vitamins: The fat in avocado also helps absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) from other foods eaten at the same meal

Practical tip: Avocado browns quickly once cut. To slow browning, leave the stone in the unused half, squeeze lemon juice over the surface, or cover tightly with film directly against the flesh. A brown avocado is still safe to eat, it's just oxidised.

FAQ

Does avocado cause constipation in babies?
No, avocado is actually mildly helpful for digestion due to its fibre and fat content. It is not a binding food. If baby has loose stools after avocado, this is typically tolerance-related rather than a reaction, reduce the amount and reintroduce gradually.
Can babies be allergic to avocado?
Avocado allergy is rare. It is not one of the top 14 EU regulated allergens. However, avocado belongs to the latex-fruit syndrome group, people with latex allergy have a higher rate of avocado sensitivity. If there is no family history of latex allergy, introduce avocado normally from 6 months.
