Banana is one of the most popular and safest first foods for babies. It's naturally sweet, soft, easy to mash, rich in potassium and vitamin B6, and requires no cooking. It can be introduced from around 6 months when you start solid foods.
How to Serve Banana by Age
| Age | How to serve | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 6–7 months | Mashed smooth with a fork, or thinly sliced spears (for BLW) | Soft enough to gum. Spears allow baby to grip and self-feed. |
| 7–9 months | Soft chunks, banana mixed into porridge or yoghurt | Developing chewing skills |
| 9–12 months | Small soft pieces, banana on toast | Pincer grip developing, can pick up small pieces |
| 12 months+ | All forms, sliced, mashed, whole (for capable chewers) | Established chewing and swallowing |
The choking risk note
A full round banana slice is a choking hazard because it can form a seal in the throat. Always slice banana lengthwise (into spears) for under-12 months, or mash. Round slices are fine from 12+ months when chewing is well established.
Nutritional Benefits
- Potassium: Important for heart function and muscle contraction
- Vitamin B6: Supports brain development
- Natural sugars: Provide quick energy, also why banana can cause constipation in large amounts
- Fibre: Ripe banana contains soluble fibre good for digestion; unripe banana is more binding
Tip: Riper (more spotted/brown) bananas are easier to digest and sweeter. Less ripe bananas are more starchy and can be mildly binding. For a constipated baby, choose a very ripe banana or use other fruits (pear, prune).

FAQ
Can banana cause constipation in babies?
Banana in moderate amounts does not cause constipation, but large quantities of less-ripe banana can be mildly binding due to the starch content. Very ripe banana is less likely to contribute to constipation. If your baby is already constipated, opt for pear, prune, or peach instead.
Can I give banana as a first food?
Yes, banana is an excellent first food. It's soft, naturally sweet, easy to prepare, and introduces baby to sweet flavours that may encourage vegetable acceptance if offered alongside. Start with a small amount of mashed banana and observe for tolerance over 3–5 days before adding more new foods.
